Bharat e-Shiksha

Bharat e-Shiksha is a flagship initiative under BharatCares (by SMEC Trust) that aims to make quality education accessible to underprivileged students through a network of digitally-empowered Bharat e-Shiksha Volunteers (BEVs).
Under this initiative, we are supporting teachers and children in rural and remote areas or urban slums by providing content-loaded tablets or content-loaded Smart TV in order to provide access to digital devices and mentored learning. The programme targets learners from government schools, with a special focus on classes 6th to 10th. The educator/volunteer has to ensure at least 6 hours of learning session/child/week of which 3 hours are through e-learning devices and 3 hours through mentored learning.
Each educator/ volunteer will be equipped with an e-Shiksha Toolkit, along with INR 3000/month as honorarium and INR 600/month towards consumables and access to the internet.

Remote Learning: The big shift

COVID-19 has adversely impacted various facets of life, including education & schooling. The education system has witnessed severe disruption, like never before, and the students from underprivileged low-income families are those who have been hit the hardest. One year into the COVID-19 pandemic, close to half the world’s students are still affected by partial or full school closures, and over 100 million additional children will fall below the minimum proficiency level in reading as a result of the health crisis. Thus, prioritizing education recovery is crucial to mitigate the impact of school closures, address learning losses and adapt education systems.

Low remote learning reachability with only 24% of households in India have internet access to receive e-education

Lack of availability of a dedicated e-learning device during school hours for the child

Sharing of learning devices within multiple children in family, leaving little or no time for the child to attend existing classes

Lack of strong monitoring & evaluation system for schools to ensure sustained educational outcomes with e-learning

Absence of guidance and supervision to help students adapt to e-learning

Bharat e-Shiksha

Bharat e-Shiksha intends to provide an equal opportunity to the marginalised students, who are in the formative years of education (6th-10th Standard), to excel in their lives through free access to quality education, technology, and mentoring. It also brings forth sustainable livelihood prospects for aspiring-emerging-experienced Bharat e-Shiksha Volunteers (BEVs) to fuel their aspirations, while also contributing to the community. The programme identifies local governments and schools as the key stakeholders in the initiative and proposes a blend of synchronous and asynchronous learning environment to accelerate the recovery of learning loss and educational gaps.

BEVs role varies from conducting baseline research to identify potential learners to facilitate our 3L model of learning to conduct periodic assessments to monitor the progress of the students.
The BEVs has to ensure at least 6 hours of learning session/child/week of which 3 hours are through e-learning devices and 3 hours through mentored learning. Each BEV will be equipped with an e-Shiksha Toolkit, along with INR 3000/month as honorarium and INR 600/month towards consumables and access to the internet.
