Despite Being On The Verge of Quitting School, Today, Om Aspires To Be A Software Engineer

As a single parent, providing for your child is hard work. It is no hidden fact that the income generated by such families is much lower. But, families raised by single mothers are always toiling for the best opportunities.

11-year-old Om Shankar Kasbe is a student of class 5. He and his two siblings were raised by their single mother, who lost her husband when Om was only a child. To ensure her children do not miss out on quality education and access to opportunities, Om’s mother worked hard to provide for the family.

However, with the onset of the pandemic, their family faced financial difficulties and Om’s mother lost her job. The young boy struggled to pursue his education and was unable to afford online education. He was on the verge of dropping out of school but didn’t go through with his decision because he heard about the Digital Learning Center (DLC) launched by BharatCares.

Immediately, he joined the DLC at Ramtekdi, Pune in February 2021. Once he began learning through digital devices (tabs and monitors) it enabled him to think and expand his horizons. He says that the school pushed him hard to learn quickly and taught him to think imaginatively. He was provided with the opportunity to become involved in various activities, and given extra attention to understand the concepts and theories better.

The program challenged his cognitive intelligence and his high-order thinking skills were stimulated. Om says that the games and activities were valuable practices for him to develop his existing skills and knowledge.

Om says, “I love to attend the classes regularly and aspire to become a software engineer one day.”
